Position Summary
The Diesel Tech Mechanic will possess the ability to inspect, diagnose and repair diesel-powered vehicles and machines. The Diesel Tech Mechanic will also be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing other City Vehicles as needed.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
The qualified candidate will have knowledge of the Cummins Diesel Engine, the Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, Mack, and International. Qualified candidates must also be able to identify issues with fuel injections, starting systems, charging systems, air intake systems, governors, and power trains.
The following skill sets will be required, but not limited to, engine operations, engine design and construction, precision measurement, engine lubricating, engine cooling systems, engine fuel systems, engine air systems, engine tune-ups, engine troubleshooting, engine electrical systems, drive trains, steering, and hydraulics; running diagnostic tests on diesel engines and interpreting the results to offer
suitable solutions; inspecting vehicle systems, including suspensions, steering, and exhausts; repairing or replacing vehicle transmissions, brakes, engines, and other associated parts. The Diesel Tech Mechanic will also be responsible for test driving repaired vehicles to gauge their performance; completing oil changes, wheel balancing, alignment, and brake checks; maintaining records of parts inventory and
serviced vehicles.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND REQUIRED ABILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position but are not limited to:
o Certification in Diesel Tech Mechanics
o State Inspection Certification
o Good Communication Skills
o Ability to use Independent Judgement and work with little direct supervision to determine the proper cause of action.
o The Diesel Tech Mechanic may be subject to after-hours call-outs by the Public Works Director or other City Departments as the need arises.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
The Candidate must possess a valid WV Driver's License and comply with the City Drug Screening Policy to operate and maintain operations of City Vehicles.
