Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) applications now open in West Virginia
The West Virginia Department of Human Services is accepting applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) from Monday, February 2, 2026 through Friday, February 20, 2026, or until available funding is exhausted.
LIEAP is a federally funded program that helps eligible households with home heating costs. Visit https://bfa.wv.gov/utility-assistancelieap for complete information.
Important note about income (Social Security)
According to DoHS, Social Security and Veterans benefits are excluded for this program.
How to apply
Applications are available:
- Online through WV PATH
- In person at local DoHS offices
- Through participating community agencies, including West Virginia Community Action Agencies and West Virginia Senior Centers
What LIEAP covers
The Bureau for Family Assistance explains that LIEAP assists eligible households with home heating costs through direct payments or payments to utility companies on a household’s behalf, and a crisis component is available for qualifying households facing loss of a heating source.
Processing time
DoHS/BFA notes applications are processed within 30 days after receipt (or after the date the program opens, whichever is later).
