St. Albans Awarded $182,000 Grant for Continued Reclamation of Dilapidated Properties.

St. Albans, WV – In a significant boost to the ongoing efforts to rejuvenate and enhance the cityscape, St. Albans has been awarded a $182,000 grant from the Reclamation of Abandoned and Dilapidated Properties Program (DLAP), as announced by Governor Jim Justice. This grant, part of the 2024 DLAP Sub Grant Awards, marks a pivotal step forward in the city’s commitment to eradicating blight and fostering a vibrant, welcoming community environment.

The funding is aimed at the continuation of the city’s aggressive initiative to remove dilapidated structures, thereby eliminating safety hazards, beautifying neighborhoods, and laying the groundwork for future development and economic growth. This initiative is a testament to the city’s resolve to not only address but also transform areas in need, making St. Albans a prime example of positive change in action.

From St. Albans Mayor Scott James: “We are excited and thankful for the DLAP Grant that we received! This amount should get us through the remaining list of dilapidated structures in St. Albans. Since taking office in 2017, the city has torn down 43 structures. Cleaning up St. Albans, one property at a time!”

From St. Albans Building & Zoning Official Marshall Chaney: “This is another huge win for the city of St Albans. With last year’s success in getting rid of almost every dilapidated structure in the city (including the junior high), we hope that this will rid our city of eyesores once and for all. Thanks to Governor Justice, and the many state and city officials that helped to make this possible. This is just one step closer to making St Albans a cleaner and safer place to live and raise a family.”

The DLAP grant will enable St. Albans to carry on with its crucial work of clearing away the old and making way for new opportunities. By removing these eyesores, the city is not just enhancing its aesthetic appeal but also opening doors to potential investments and improvements that benefit the entire community.

This grant is part of a broader state initiative that has seen 69 communities, including St. Albans, receiving over $15.6 million in funding to tackle the challenges posed by abandoned and dilapidated properties. The program underscores West Virginia’s commitment to revitalizing towns and cities across the state, ensuring they remain attractive, safe, and poised for growth.

The City of St. Albans expresses its gratitude to Governor Jim Justice, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, and all involved in the DLAP for their support and confidence in our local efforts. Together, we are not just cleaning up; we are building a foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future for St. Albans and its residents.
