George Washington Monument Re-Dedication at St. Albans High School

Historic George Washington Monument Returns Home to St. Albans High School

ST. ALBANS, WV – The historic George Washington Monument has officially returned home to St. Albans High School, marking a significant moment for the community. A dedication ceremony was held on Tuesday, February 4, on the front lawn of the high school, where a large crowd gathered to celebrate the preservation of this important piece of history.

The event saw attendance from SAHS Alumni Association members, Mayor Scott James, SAHS Principal Dr. Jacklyn Swayne, representatives from the Kanawha County School Board, and the West Virginia State Board of Education, along with many members of the public. Their presence underscored the importance of maintaining connections to the past while celebrating the efforts of those dedicated to historical preservation.

The monument, originally erected in 1932, commemorates George Washington’s 1784 acquisition of 2,000 acres along the Kanawha and Coal Rivers. It was first placed in front of the original St. Albans High School on Kanawha Terrace, which later became St. Albans Junior High. When the junior high closed in 1990 and the building was later demolished in 2023, the monument was removed from the site for safekeeping.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the SAHS Alumni Association, the monument has been beautifully restored and relocated to the new St. Albans High School, just a mile from its original site. The return of the monument stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to honoring its history and preserving the legacy of those who came before.

During the dedication, speakers emphasized the significance of the monument, not only as a historical marker but also as a symbol of the city’s pride and heritage. Mayor Scott James and Dr. Jacklyn Swayne both highlighted the importance of ensuring that future generations understand and appreciate the area’s rich past.

Community members in attendance expressed appreciation for the restoration efforts, with many alumni reminiscing about their time at St. Albans High School and sharing stories of seeing the monument in front of the original school.

With the monument now standing proudly at its new location, St. Albans High School continues to serve as a pillar of education and history for the city, reminding residents of the deep roots that connect the past to the present
