St. Albans, WV – The City of St. Albans, in collaboration with the Kanawha Obedience Training Club and the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society (KCHS), is proud to announce the dedication of the new Pet Microchip Scanning Station at the St. Albans Police Department, located at 613 MacCorkle Avenue. This innovative, 24/7 resource will assist in reuniting lost pets with their families more quickly and efficiently. The dedication event will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
The event will begin with a Microchip Installation Clinic from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, hosted by the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society. Pet owners will have the opportunity to have their pets microchipped for just $25 per pet, significantly increasing the chances of a lost pet returning home. The official dedication ceremony will follow from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
A Tribute to Sgt. James Butler & K-9 Deuce
The scanning station is being dedicated in honor of Sgt. James Butler and his K-9 partner, Deuce, who were valued members of the St. Albans Police Department. This memorial serves as a lasting tribute to their service and the vital role of K-9 officers in our community.
How the Scanning Station Works
The Pet Microchip Scanning Station is the first of its kind in Kanawha County, providing a free and accessible tool for Good Samaritans who find lost pets. Anyone can use the station to scan a pet for a microchip. If a chip is detected, the finder can access the microchip registry online to retrieve the pet owner’s contact information and facilitate a reunion.
Debbie Keener, a member of the Kanawha Obedience Training Club, initiated the project with the goal of reducing the number of lost pets entering shelters. “This station empowers the community to play a direct role in reuniting lost pets with their families. By working together, we can bring more pets home safely and keep them out of shelters.”
Community Support & Special Guests
In addition to KCHS and the Kanawha Obedience Training Club, local businesses and organizations are stepping up to support the event. Pet Supplies Plus and Gateway Animal Hospital will be on-site providing special giveaways and treats for pets. The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society will also have puppies available for adoption, offering attendees the chance to give a loving home to a furry friend in need.
