ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — The City of St. Albans recently welcomed West Virginia State Treasurer Larry Pack to Old Main for a special check presentation, returning $4,875.24 in unclaimed property to the municipality. Mayor Scott James accepted the check on behalf of the city during the event.
The funds, recovered through the State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division, consist primarily of undelivered checks and misplaced funds that are turned over to the state. The $4,875.24 recovered for St. Albans will be put to immediate use to benefit the community. Mayor James announced that the city plans to use the newly recovered funds to pay down an existing equipment loan for the St. Albans Public Works Department.
“Anytime you show up, it’s always a good day,” Mayor James joked during the presentation, thanking the Treasurer’s office. “This is such a great program that you guys have.”
By directing these recovered funds toward the Public Works Department’s equipment loan, the City of St. Albans continues its commitment to fiscal responsibility while ensuring city workers have the reliable tools they need to maintain and improve city infrastructure.
Treasurer Pack commended the city’s leadership and recent development. “We’re glad to bring some money to you, to the City of St. Albans… thanks so much for what you’re doing down there,” Treasurer Pack said. “The town’s growing, a lot of good things are happening. We’re glad to be here today.”
Treasurer Pack also used the opportunity to remind the public that local governments aren’t the only ones with lost funds. He noted that there is currently about $80 million in unclaimed property belonging to Kanawha County residents alone, and over $500 million statewide.
“Every time we do a public presentation, it drives people to our website, and you can check if you have unclaimed property,” Pack explained. “Absolutely, we want people to go to the website and check. All you have to do is go to the website and put your name in.”
