St. Albans Teen Court
St. Albans Teen Court is a court only for teenagers aged 12 – 18, run by teens. At the 79th Session of the WV Legislature In 2010, Governor Joe Manchin signed Senate BIii No. 669, giving municipalities legal authority to run teen courts in West Virginia. Teen Courts differ significantly from traditional Juvenile courts. Even the language is different.
Teen Courts are based on the idea of Restorative Justice. Teens who have committed an offense are “sentenced” by ‘their peers to righting
their wrong, whether through community service, apologies, or numerous other Dispositions.
The St. Albans Teen Court holds teens who have violated a St. Albans ordinance responsible for their actions. For this reason, these teens,
who are first-time offenders and who choose Teen Court, are known as Respondents. As part of their Disposition, Respondents
must also serve a minimum of two jury duties.
