City of St. Albans Takes Bold Step in Addressing Dilapidated Structures with New Search Warrant Authority

St. Albans, WV – The City of St. Albans has taken a significant step forward in its fight against abandoned and dilapidated properties by gaining the authority to issue search warrants for these structures. This new capability is expected to accelerate the process of identifying and addressing properties that are in poor condition and pose risks to the community.

The new initiative allows city officials to obtain search warrants to inspect properties deemed dilapidated. Once a search warrant is issued, a comprehensive evaluation is conducted to determine the condition of the property. If deemed necessary, the property can be condemned and demolished, significantly reducing blight and improving neighborhood aesthetics.

“Having the ability to issue search warrants marks a transformative moment for St. Albans,” said Mayor Scott James. “It allows us to expedite the process of dealing with these problematic structures, benefiting the entire community by improving property values and enhancing neighborhood safety.”

The City’s Building Department, along with the Fire and Police Departments, has been instrumental in this initiative. Their collaboration has been crucial in ensuring that this process is carried out effectively and efficiently. These departments have worked diligently to address issues related to dilapidated properties, contributing to a cleaner and safer community.

The support from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, along with local efforts, has already led to the demolition of over 40 dilapidated structures in St. Albans. The new authority to issue search warrants is expected to further streamline the process and address remaining challenges.

The initiative not only addresses immediate concerns related to abandoned properties but also aims to foster long-term improvements in the city’s neighborhoods.

For further information or to report a dilapidated property, residents are encouraged to contact the St. Albans Building Department at (304) 727-2962.
