Summer is in full swing, and so are the activities and events in SA! Parks and Rec are very busy with different activities, including pool parties, Party in the Park, Art in the Park, and more. YakFest was fantastic—our biggest to date and brought over 10,000 people to SA. Tour de Coal estimated about 2200 kayaks traveled the Coal River from Tornado to St. Albans.
We look forward to an even bigger Yakfest & Tour de Coal in 2024. Stay tuned for more details.
On July 8th, we unveiled the new name for the plaza off Olde Main at C Street, The Joe Dobbs Square on Olde Main. Joe was the founder and owner of the original Fret ‘N Fiddle store on 2nd Street, where it remains in business today. On August 12th at the next open mic night, we will be introducing some of Joe’s family, so mark it on your calendar and come enjoy a free night of music. WV Radio will be giving away 500 gallons of free gas on July 29th, from 10-12 on Olde Main.
Also, on August 12th, we will be celebrating Heritage Days on Olde Main Street to recognize some of the rich history of St. Albans. Then on August 26th, the 2nd annual Mountaineer Main Street will be taking place on Olde Main. Last year’s was a great success, and we expect this year’s to be bigger and better! The WVU pep band will be participating this year, as well as the dance team, cheerleaders, and the WVU Mascot. There will be several former Mountaineer players present to sign autographs. I want to close with the old St. Albans Jr. High School. It is down! This building has been an eyesore and safety concern for 30 plus years—but no longer! A big thank-you to Thrasher Engineering, Astar Abatement Company, and Rodney Loftis for the great work that they did in the process of demolishing this structure. Remember that it takes all of us to make our community a great place!
